batt
–noun
a sheet of matted cotton, wool, or synthetic fibers.

That is the dictionary term for it but for you and me batts are those lovely panels between the drywall and the concrete which keeps us insulated. They come in differet "R-Values", length as well as width.

  1. Mesaure the height and width of your walls. Basically from left to right one corner to the next then from top to bottom one corner to the next.
  2. Multiply the width by height to find the square footage.
  3. Next determine the depth. You do so by measuring from the back of the wall up to the front of the stud.

  4. Depth R-Value
    2.5 " R 8
    3.6 " R 12
    6 " R 20
    8.5 " R 28
    10.5 " R 35
    11.5 " R 40

  5. Your next step is to measure the length and height between the studs to determine the size of the batt you will need.
  6. The final step is to select the batt your want and divide the square footage of the area being covered by the square footage in each bat.
